What Is Chilodonella?

Under the microscope, Chilodonella presents as a heart-shaped organism. When it dies, it takes on a rounded appearance filled with small granular structures. Despite its small size, this parasite causes significant damage to skin tissue and gill function.

Recognising the Signs

The parasite concentrates its attack on the skin and gills, with a particular preference for the area between the head and dorsal fin. Early indicators include waxy, circular patches on the skin. As the infection progresses, the skin thickens, turns white, and begins to break down. Heavily infested fish often hang near the surface, gasping — a behaviour known as piping — as the gills lose their ability to absorb oxygen.

Why Professional Treatment Matters

Chilodonella moves fast. By the time visible symptoms appear, the infestation may already be advanced. A microscopic scraping is the only way to confirm the diagnosis and determine the extent of the infection. Contact a koi health specialist immediately if you suspect Chilodonella.
